Fastdalstinden is the peak that people book a second Lyngen week to do. It sits on the east side of the Lyngenfjord above Koppangen, which means it looks across the water at the Lyngseidet peninsula and the bigger glaciated faces. 1,275 metres, non-glaciated, with a sustained 1,100-metre climb from the trailhead and a long ski descent in the right conditions. This is a full day.
If Goalsevárri is the Lyngen entry-level objective, Fastdalstinden is the intermediate-plus test. Longer, steeper at the top, and with a committing summit ridge. Skiers and scramblers both come here for the same reason: the fjord view from the summit is one of the best in Troms.

The honest grade
DNT Red in summer: strenuous, sustained, with a scramble on the upper ridge. In ski season, this is avalanche terrain from roughly 600 metres upward, with the final 200 metres of the summit push on aspects that can hold wind slab into May. Fitness matters. A 1,100-metre ski-tour day with a long descent is not a half-day objective.
The upper ridge in summer has short scrambling sections without fixed protection. The drop on the east side is sustained enough that a slip would not be recoverable. Steady movement, hands on the rock.
The route (ski touring)
Trailhead. Park at Koppangen harbour on the east side of the Lyngenfjord, reached by the ferry from Svensby or by the road around via Skibotn. Small lot, 10 to 12 cars.
Lower approach. Skin up through birch for 300 metres of gain, then onto open terrain above the tree line. 60 to 80 minutes.
Middle approach. Long open-slope switchbacks up the Fastdalen valley. Gradient increases. 90 to 120 minutes.
Upper flank. The summit push is on a steeper aspect, 35 to 40 degrees in sections. Ski crampons useful in firm conditions. 45 minutes.
Summit ridge. Short ski or boot to the summit cairn depending on snow. Exposed to both sides. 15 minutes.
Descent. On a good corn day the descent gives 800 to 900 metres of near-continuous skiing back toward Koppangen. 45 minutes to the car in good snow.
The route (summer)
The same line as the ski approach is walked on summer ground. Birch, then tundra, then scree, then rock scramble on the upper ridge. No marked trail above the tree line. Navigation is by terrain reading and cairns. 6 to 7 hours for the full round trip.
The turn-back rule
- Varsom Level 3 or higher. The upper flank is in avalanche terrain. Level 3 means rethink.
- Wind slab on the summit aspect. Visible drifting on the upper ridge is a turn-back signal. The windward aspect clears, the lee aspect loads.
- Whiteout in the Fastdalen valley. The approach is navigable in poor visibility, but the summit ridge is not. Turn back at the sub-summit if you cannot see it.
- Late start. If you are not on the trail by 09:00 in April, the south aspects will be in wet-snow condition by early afternoon. Reverse before they cycle.
Gear for this route
- Transceiver, shovel, probe. Non-negotiable for the ski-season route.
- Ski crampons. The upper flank is firm in the mornings.
- Helmet. Worn from the mid-approach onward.
- Airbag pack if you own one.
- Wind shell, insulation layer, spare gloves, goggles.
- Headlamp. A 7-hour day with a late start can finish in fading light in March.
- 2 to 3 litres of water, snacks for a full day.
Fjellvettreglene on this route
- Rule 1: Plan and communicate your route. Tell someone at Lyngseidet or your accommodation your plan for the day.
- Rule 3: Pay attention to weather and avalanche forecasts. varsom.no region Lyngen. Check twice: night before and morning of.
- Rule 4: Be equipped to help yourself and others. Companion rescue drill, first aid kit, repair kit.
- Rule 8: Turn back in time. Fastdalstinden is a long day. The last hour of climbing is when fatigue meets exposure. If either is wrong, turn back.

Who should do this route
- Returning Lyngen ski tourers. After Goalsevárri and a couple of warm-up days, this is the next step.
- Fit summer scramblers. If you like Romsdalseggen or Store Skagastølstind's Fannaråken approach, you will like Fastdalstinden.
- Guided groups. This is a day-three or day-four objective on a well-run ski week.
Who should skip this
- Anyone on day one of a Lyngen trip. The fitness demand is real. Start elsewhere.
- Ski tourers without ski-crampon experience. The upper flank in firm conditions is where crampons earn their weight. Practice in less committing terrain first.
- Any forecast day above Varsom Level 3. Not this route. Not this day.
