Sarkofagen is the sarcophagus-shaped peak sitting behind Longyearbyen at roughly 500 meters. You reach it by walking up onto the Longyearbreen glacier, crossing onto the Larsbreen glacier, and climbing the loose slope to the summit. It is the most-booked full-day hike on Svalbard, and the reason is simple: it is the clearest introduction to real Svalbard mountain terrain that can still be done in one day from town.
What this hike actually is
A 12 km round trip from Nybyen in Longyearbyen. Roughly 500 meters of elevation gain. 7 to 9 hours on the ground. The route walks up the moraine valley, steps onto the Longyearbreen glacier tongue, traverses to the Larsbreen glacier, and ascends the final scree and block field to the summit. The summit block is the distinctive elongated shape that gives the peak its name.
From the top, the view covers the Longyearbyen valley on one side and the interior glacier plateau of Nordenskiöld Land on the other. On a clear day you see across to Operafjellet and the peaks behind Adventdalen. On a bad day you see the inside of a cloud, which is why the turnaround rules matter.
What works
This is the day hike that makes Svalbard make sense. You get the glacier travel, the summit, the permafrost scree, the moraine, and the polar bear protocol all packaged into a single day that starts and ends in Longyearbyen. Guiding companies run it regularly from late June through mid-September, so slot availability is the easiest to secure of any multi-hour hike on Svalbard.
Glacier travel on Longyearbreen and Larsbreen is low-crevasse-risk compared to most of Svalbard. The glaciers here are relatively flat tongues, not heavily fractured. Rope is still standard equipment for guided groups, but the likelihood of an active crevasse fall is lower than on most of the archipelago's glacier systems.
What does not work
Doing this independently. Sarkofagen is not a self-guided hike unless you are a licensed Svalbard guide or equivalent. Glacier travel, polar bear protection, navigation in low-visibility conditions, and self-rescue capability all stack on top of a 500-meter peak in a place where the nearest hospital is a medical evacuation flight to Tromsø. Guided is the standard. Solo without serious Arctic credentials is the wrong answer.
The second issue is the final 80 meters to the summit. The block field is loose. Rocks move. Groups need to space out on the ascent so that a dislodged rock from the person above does not hit the person below. Good guides enforce this. If your guide isn't enforcing it, note the problem.
The honest assessment
Sarkofagen is the hike worth doing if you are in Longyearbyen for four days or longer and want a proper mountain day. It is more committing than Platåberget and less committing than Trollsteinen or Hiorthfjellet. The glacier section is the selling point, not a logistical obstacle. The summit view is not guaranteed. Svalbard weather closes peaks in minutes. If the sky is white when you wake up, accept that you might turn back at the glacier edge.

Gear that matters
- Waterproof boots with stiff sole suitable for crampon strap-on
- Microspikes or light crampons (supplied by most operators)
- Shell jacket and pants rated for sustained wind
- Wool or synthetic base layers. Cotton kills in the Arctic, including in August.
- Sunglasses. Glacier glare is real even under overcast skies.
- 1.5 liters of water minimum. The glacier melt is drinkable in flowing streams.
The Svalbard polar bear rule (unchanged)
Same rule as Platåberget, with the distinction that Sarkofagen is well outside any gray zone. You are unambiguously in wilderness. Rifle with trained carrier is standard. Every licensed Svalbard guide carries one. If you book and the guide is not visibly armed, ask. If the answer is unsatisfactory, walk away.
Fjellvettreglene in Svalbard context
For Sarkofagen, the critical rules are:
- Rule 3 (weather and avalanche forecasts): Check varsom.no for snow and glacier conditions. Check yr.no for cloud cover and wind. Check the Sysselmesteren advisory for polar bear activity in Longyeardalen.
- Rule 4 (self-rescue): Crampons, harness, rope, and the knowledge to use them if solo. Guided clients get this as part of the package.
- Rule 8 (turn back in time): Sarkofagen's turnaround points are the glacier edge and the base of the final block field. Beyond those, retreat gets harder.
Who should hike Sarkofagen
Travelers in Longyearbyen for four days or more who want a full mountain day. Hikers who have done Platåberget and want the next step. Visitors comfortable with the guided model and prepared to turn back if conditions warrant.
Who should skip it
Day-trippers. Visitors with less than three days in Longyearbyen should do Platåberget or an ice cave tour instead. Anyone with significant knee problems. Hikers who have not previously walked on a glacier in any form. Independent hikers without Svalbard guide credentials.
Bjørn Haugen writes from Tromsø, where he has guided Arctic expeditions and search and rescue for 25 years. His first Svalbard summit was Sarkofagen, in August 1999. The glaciers have retreated visibly since.
