Seiland is the glaciated island west of Alta. Most travellers to Alta never set foot on it. The ferry from Hakkstabben runs a handful of times a day to Eidvågen, and the island has roughly 50 permanent residents, one road, and Seilandsjøkelen — the northernmost icecap in mainland Norway. Storvikaksla is a 750-metre ridge summit that gives you the empty Finnmark day without the glacier gear requirement.

This is DNT Red. Navigation matters. The weather window matters more. Plan the ferries properly or you will be stuck on the island overnight.

The honest grade

DNT Red. Long day, limited trail marking on the upper sections, real route-finding across open ground. No scrambling of note, but the cumulative demands — distance, navigation, remoteness — put this above the Blue grade firmly. Weather moves fast off the Barents Sea and the island has no shelter on the upper plateau.

The route

Trailhead. Ferry from Hakkstabben (Stjernøya side) or Bekkarfjord (mainland) to Eidvågen or Hønseby on Seiland. Confirm the crossing the day before on the Boreal or Torghatten Nord schedule — sailings are limited and cancel in high wind.

Lower section. From the landing, walk the island road west, then pick up the marked trail toward Storvika. 4 km of road and trail across rolling ground. 90 minutes.

Middle section. Open tundra climbing gradually toward the ridge base. Cairned line, indistinct in places. Compass work mandatory in cloud. 2 hours.

Summit ridge. Final 200 metres of gain on a broad ridge with occasional rock steps. No exposure of consequence but wind on the ridge is the variable. 60 minutes.

Summit. Cairn with a view north to Seilandsjøkelen and south across the fjord to the Alta mainland. 30 minutes on top, weather permitting.

Descent. Same route. 2.5 to 3 hours. Budget the ferry return with a 90-minute buffer.

The turn-back rule

Wind over 15 m/s on the plateau: turn back before the ridge. Cloud closing with visibility under 100 metres: turn back immediately. Late on the ferry schedule: turn back and re-plan. Missing the last ferry on Seiland in autumn means a cold wait.

Gear

  • Proper hiking boots.
  • Full waterproof shell, windproof, insulating layer.
  • Map and compass. Turkart 1:50,000. Phone GPS as backup only.
  • Head torch.
  • 2 litres water, food for 8 hours.
  • Bivvy bag if the forecast is marginal.
  • Ferry schedule printed or screenshotted.

Fjellvettreglene applied

All nine rules. Load-bearing: Rule 1 (plan, and tell someone on the mainland your return ferry), Rule 3 (check weather and marine forecasts — ferries cancel), Rule 4 (self-rescue equipment in remote country), Rule 7 (map and compass, not phone), Rule 8 (turn back in time).
