Trollsteinen sits at 850 meters behind Sarkofagen. From the Sarkofagen summit you can see Trollsteinen as the longer, sharper ridge rising to the south. Reaching it is not a small addition. It is another 3 to 4 hours of exposed ridge work on top of the standard Sarkofagen day, and the descent is where the decision gets made about whether the day goes well.
What this hike actually is
An 18 km round trip from Nybyen in Longyearbyen. 850 meters of elevation gain. 10 to 12 hours on the ground. The route follows the Sarkofagen approach up Longyearbreen and onto Larsbreen glacier, continues past the Sarkofagen junction, and climbs the ridge to the Trollsteinen summit.
The summit ridge is narrow in places. Not knife-edge, but narrow enough that guided groups typically space out and remove packs for balance on the most exposed sections. The top is a broad plateau with the highest point on the southern end.
From Trollsteinen the view opens much further than from Sarkofagen. You see the Van Mijenfjorden to the south on clear days, the Longyearbyen valley and Adventdalen to the north, and a chain of peaks that runs east into the interior ice fields.
What works
This is the Svalbard summit that locals and repeat visitors save for when the forecast is clean. On the right day it is the best single hike on the archipelago you can do without an overnight. The exposure, the glacier travel, and the 850 meter summit combine into a day that feels commensurate with Svalbard's reputation.
The approach piggybacks on infrastructure that exists for Sarkofagen. Same trailhead, same glacier rope protocol, same firearm rental. The guides who offer Trollsteinen are running it on known ground up to the Sarkofagen junction.
What does not work
Weather risk is compounded. Trollsteinen is high enough and exposed enough that the summit weather can be measurably worse than the Sarkofagen weather. Groups that reach the Sarkofagen/Trollsteinen decision point in marginal conditions are turning back at least half the time. Plan for the possibility that you book Trollsteinen and end up summiting only Sarkofagen. That is a good outcome, not a failed day.
The second issue is descent fatigue. After 7 hours of ascent and ridge work, the final scree descent back to Longyearbreen glacier is where most injuries happen. Loose rock, tired legs, late-day Svalbard light that casts confusing shadows. Trekking poles matter here.
The honest assessment
Trollsteinen is for people who have done real mountain days elsewhere and want the Svalbard version of that experience. It is not the first Svalbard summit you should attempt. If you are choosing between Trollsteinen and Sarkofagen as your first Svalbard hike, the answer is Sarkofagen. Go to Sarkofagen, see how your body handles permafrost scree and glacier travel, and if conditions align on another day and you have the stamina, book Trollsteinen.
For a fit hiker with some alpine experience and a clear forecast, this is the day that justifies the flight up to Svalbard.
The logistics table
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Trailhead | Top of Nybyen, Longyearbyen |
| Distance round trip | 18 km |
| Elevation gain | 850 m |
| Estimated time | 10–12 hours |
| DNT grade equivalent | Red (glacier + exposed ridge + Svalbard multiplier) |
| Season | Early July to early September (narrower window than Sarkofagen) |
| Polar bear protection | Mandatory. Rifle + trained carrier. Effectively guide-only. |
| Typical guided price | 2,190–2,590 NOK per person |
| Operators | Svalbard Wildlife Expeditions, Better Moments, Basecamp Explorer (availability limited; book early) |
| Group size | Capped at 6 typically |
Gear that matters
- Stiff mountaineering-capable boots, Vibram sole
- Crampons (supplied by operator; strap-on must fit your boot, confirm at briefing)
- Harness + rope protocol (operator-supplied)
- Trekking poles for the descent. Not optional at this length.
- Full shell system rated for 40+ knot wind
- Wool base layers, synthetic mid, down for summit stops
- 2 liters of water, 3,000+ kcal of food
- Headlamp. Yes, in July, because cloud cover mid-descent can make scree route-finding meaningfully darker than expected.
The Svalbard polar bear rule (unchanged)
Same as Sarkofagen and Platåberget. Wilderness beyond the first kilometer above Nybyen. Rifle protocol enforced. No independent attempts unless you are a licensed Svalbard guide.
Fjellvettreglene in Svalbard context
For Trollsteinen, the three rules that matter most:
- Rule 2 (adapt to ability): If the Sarkofagen ascent wiped you out, Trollsteinen is not the hike for this trip.
- Rule 8 (turn back in time): The Sarkofagen summit is the natural bail point. Taking it is not a failure. Pushing past it into worsening weather is.
- Rule 9 (conserve energy): Eat on the ridge. The group that skips food at the 6-hour mark is the group that gets a knee injury at the 10-hour mark.
Who should hike Trollsteinen
Hikers with previous alpine experience (Jotunheimen Red grade, Scottish Munros, Alps summer hut traverses, or equivalent). Visitors with five or more days in Longyearbyen and flexibility to wait for the right weather window. Travelers who understand the guided model and accept that the guide's turnaround decision is final.
Who should skip it
First-time Svalbard visitors. Hikers without glacier experience or willingness to wear crampons on strap-on setup. Anyone with knee issues. Travelers on a tight 2–3 day trip. The right answer in those cases is Sarkofagen plus an ice cave tour or a boat day to Pyramiden.
Bjørn Haugen writes from Tromsø, where he has guided Arctic expeditions and search and rescue for 25 years. Trollsteinen is the Svalbard day he recommends when the forecast is right. When the forecast is not right, he recommends Sarkofagen or nothing.
