There is no best month to visit Norway. There is a best month for what you want to do, and it is often not the one in the photographs. The aurora needs darkness, so it disappears for the whole summer. The mountain roads need snow clearance, so the fjord passes open in spring. And July, the month everyone picks, is the one month when Lofoten and Geiranger are at their most crowded.

The short answer

Season by season

[WINTER] November to February. In Tromsø the sun does not rise from about 27 November to 15 January (the polar night, mørketid). The sky is not black: you get hours of blue twilight around midday, and the aurora season is in full swing. In Longyearbyen on Svalbard the sun stays below the horizon from 26 October to 15 February. January brings the Tromsø International Film Festival (18 to 24 January 2027), and Sami Week fills Tromsø from 31 January to 7 February 2027. Pack for -10°C or colder, and know the winter tyre rules before you drive.

March and April. The best-kept secret in the north: long, bright days, deep snow and the aurora still going until late March. Ski touring in the Lyngen Alps peaks in spring. Finnmarksløpet, Europe's longest sled dog race, starts in Alta on 5 March 2027, and the Sami Easter Festival in Kautokeino runs from 20 to 29 March 2027. In Lofoten, the skrei season is at its height.

May and June. The mountain roads open. In 2026, Trollstigen opened on 27 April, its earliest date ever; in a normal year it opens between mid-May and early June. Snowmelt drives the waterfalls to their peak flow, the midnight sun starts in the north, and the high trails stay snowbound until late June.

[SUMMER] July and August. Everything is open, and everyone is here. Book ferries with a car, rorbu cabins in Lofoten and staffed DNT cabins well ahead. Midnight sun ends in Tromsø around 22 July. If you come in July, start every famous hike before 08:00.

September and October. The cruise traffic thins, the birches turn gold, and the first snow lands on the peaks. The aurora is back from late September. Hardanger's fruit harvest runs into October, with Ulvik's Fruktsleppet on the first weekend of the month. DNT's staffed cabins close in mid-September, and the Sognefjellet road (Rv55) closes in late October.

The slow alternative

Most people come to the fjords with five places and four days. Come in September instead, with two places and a week. The ferries still run, the trails are empty, the light is low and gold, and the people serving you lunch have time to talk. The full events calendar for the season you choose is on our events page.

And whenever you come, end one day at a farm shop in Hardanger or a harbour kiosk in Lofoten. The season you pick decides what is on the counter: cider in October, skrei in March, strawberries in July. That is the most honest calendar in Norway.
