Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten has operated the coastal route since 1893, the world's oldest continuous passenger shipping service. The fleet includes the historic MS Lofoten (1964) alongside modernised 1990s–2000s vessels. Fleet retrofitting is underway: battery hybrid technology and liquefied biogas (LBG) propulsion reduce emissions by up to 25% on the route. Book the full 11-night Bergen–Kirkenes sailing or any individual segment. Cabins range from interior berths to premium ocean-view suites.

  • Operating since 1893, oldest continuous passenger route in the world
  • Fleet of 9 ships, including MS Lofoten (1964, historic preservation)

Havila Voyages

Havila Voyages launched in 2021 as the green challenger on the coastal route. Four brand-new vessels (Havila Castor, Pollux, Capella, Capricorn) are built with the world's largest marine battery packs for passenger ships, enabling zero-emission sailing for up to 4 hours through UNESCO-designated fjords. LNG (liquefied natural gas) propulsion covers open-sea legs. Havila and Hurtigruten sail alternating days: every port receives a call every 24 hours in each direction.

  • Four brand-new ships built 2021–2022, Castor, Pollux, Capella, Capricorn
  • World's largest marine battery packs for passenger ships

Arctic Circle Crossing

At 66°33'N, the ship crosses the Arctic Circle, the latitude above which the sun does not set during summer solstice and does not rise during winter solstice. Both Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages mark the northbound crossing with an on-board ceremony. In summer, the midnight sun is visible from the deck for the entire Helgeland and Northern Norway stretch. In winter, the northern lights begin to appear with regularity above this latitude.

  • Crossing at 66°33'N, the Arctic Circle
  • Midnight sun visible from deck: June–July northbound

Svartisen Glacier

Svartisen is the second-largest glacier on the Norwegian mainland, covering 370 km². From Ørnes on the coastal route, local ferry connections reach the Svartisen base. The Engabreen arm descends to 20 metres above sea level, one of the lowest-altitude glaciers in mainland Europe. A 3 km walk from the fjord landing leads to the glacier face. The ice is blue from compressed air exclusion and moves approximately 1 metre per day at the ice front.

  • 370 km², second largest on Norwegian mainland
  • Engabreen arm: glacier face at 20m above sea level
