Where

Places in Norwegian Fjords

The towns, villages and fjords that anchor a trip here. Each opens its own guide.

Sognefjord

Sognefjord runs 205 km inland from the coast and reaches 1,308 meters at its deepest point. It is the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. The main arms split into Aurlandsfjord (Flåm at its head) and Nærøyfjord (UNESCO-listed). Express boats connect Bergen to Flåm in 5.5 hours. Balestrand, Vik, and Solvorn sit along the shore. The Urnes stave church (1130, UNESCO) stands above Lustrafjord at the eastern end.

  • Length: 205 km. Depth: 1,308m at deepest
  • Branches: Aurlandsfjord, Nærøyfjord, Lustrafjord

Nærøyfjord

Nærøyfjord branches off Sognefjord and narrows to 250 meters between walls that rise 1,000 meters on both sides. It has carried UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005. From 2026, only zero-emission vessels operate here. The Future of The Fjords (all-electric catamaran) runs Gudvangen to Flåm daily. Sea kayaking from Gudvangen or Bakka is the closest you will get to the waterfalls. The Rimstigen, Stegastein, and Bakka-Nali trails climb the walls.

  • UNESCO World Heritage since 2005
  • Narrowest point: 250m between 1,000m walls

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord runs 179 km from the coast to Odda at the southern end. Norway’s fourth-longest fjord. Sørfjorden (the inner arm) is where Trolltunga sits: 27 km round-trip, 800 meters of ascent, 10–12 hours on the trail. The apple harvest runs late August through October. Ulvik, Eidfjord, and Utne anchor the shore villages. The Folgefonna glacier covers the plateau above. Voss and Odda function as the two basecamps.

  • Length: 179 km. Norway’s fourth-longest fjord
  • Trolltunga: 27 km round-trip, 800m ascent, guided October–May

Geirangerfjord

Geirangerfjord runs 15 km from Hellesylt to Geiranger village at its head. UNESCO since 2005. The Seven Sisters waterfall drops 250 meters into the fjord from the north wall. Access from the south on the Rv63 crosses Trollstigen and Ørnevegen (closed October to May). From the north, the Rv63 climbs from Eidsdal. The village has 200 permanent residents and 900,000 visitors per season. Book the fjord cruise or the kayak. Come in September when the cruise ship traffic thins.

  • UNESCO since 2005. Length: 15 km
  • Seven Sisters waterfall: 250m drop from north wall
