Bergen and Lofoten both sit on Norway's west coast, so people plan them as neighbours. They aren't. By road, Svolvær is about 1,570 km from Bergen, and the last stretch means either a ferry across the open Vestfjord or a long loop around it. You have five ways to make the trip. The right one depends on how many days you have and how much of the coast you want to see on the way.

Fly via Bodø

Widerøe runs the only nonstop flights between Bergen and Bodø, about six a week. From Bodø, Widerøe flies to both Svolvær and Leknes every day, and the hop takes 25 minutes. Svolvær suits the eastern islands. Leknes sits in the middle of the chain and is the closer airport for Reine and the west.

Both Lofoten airports take only small propeller aircraft on short runways. Build a buffer day into the trip before anything you can't move, such as a ferry booking or a flight home.

Fly to Evenes and drive

Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes takes jets and sits 164 km from Svolvær. The E10 runs over the Lofoten Mainland Connection (Lofast) the whole way, with no ferry, and the drive takes about two and a half hours. Pick up a rental car at the airport and you control your timing from the first day.

Drive the whole way

The inland route runs from Bergen to Trondheim, then north on the E6 through Nordland. It is about 1,570 km and close to 24 hours of driving before stops. Plan three days at least, and more if you want to see anything on the way. Near Bodø you choose: put the car on the Bodø–Moskenes ferry, or keep driving north to the E10 and come into Lofoten from the east over Lofast.

[WINTER] From 16 October to 30 April, Norwegian law requires at least 3 mm of tread on your tyres in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark. Long stretches of the E6 in Nordland run far from services. Fill the tank whenever you can.

Train and ferry

There is no direct rail line from Bergen to the north. You ride the Bergen Line to Oslo and change for Trondheim: a long day on two trains. From Trondheim, SJ Nord runs the Nordland Line 729 km to Bodø in about 10 hours, with two departures a day each way. One is a night train with sleeper compartments, so you can sleep through the run north and reach Bodø in the morning. From Bodø you take the ferry to Moskenes or the express boat to Svolvær.

Hurtigruten or Havila

The coastal ships leave Bergen in the evening (Hurtigruten's departure is 20:30) and work north port by port. Northbound, Hurtigruten calls at Stamsund at 19:15 and Svolvær at 21:20 on day four. Havila Voyages sails the same coastal route. Treat it as transport with a cabin: you see the whole coast from the water, but you arrive at night.

Crossing the Vestfjord

Most routes end with the Vestfjord, the open water between the mainland and Lofoten. Torghatten Nord runs both crossings from Bodø.

  • Car ferry Bodø–Moskenes: about 3 hours 15 minutes, up to 3 hours 45 minutes in rough water. A car up to 6 metres costs 605 NOK. Only half the capacity can be booked ahead, and booking costs 130 NOK. In peak season the operator warns that cars without a booking can be left on the dock. Some sailings call at Værøy and Røst on the way; take a direct sailing if you can.
  • Express boat Bodø–Svolvær (hurtigbåt): about 3.5 hours, passengers only, one or two departures a day.

The Vestfjord is exposed. In winter, wind and swell cancel sailings. Check the operator's service messages the morning you travel, and keep the Bodø–Svolvær flight as your fallback.

Which one I would take

With a week, fly to Bodø, sleep there, and take the morning ferry to Moskenes with a booked car. With three weeks and a car, drive the E6 north and come home over Lofast and Evenes. With no hurry at all, take the coastal ship and let the coast pass at the speed it was built for.

Whatever you choose, stand on deck for the last hour of the Vestfjord crossing. The Lofoten wall (Lofotveggen), the line of peaks along the islands, rises out of the sea ahead of you. The air smells of salt and diesel, and in winter of the fish drying on the racks in the harbours. That is the moment you arrive, whatever the timetable says.
