Goalsevárri is the first peak most ski-touring clients do when they arrive in Lyngseidet for a week-long course. 833 metres, non-glaciated, south-facing, and with a short ridge to Store Kjostind's southwest flank that gives a genuine alpine descent without requiring a rope team. From late March to late April it is one of the reliable objectives when Jiehkkevárri is out of condition.
This is not a beginner ski tour. It is the entry-level Lyngen objective, which is a different statement. Lyngen entry-level means transceiver, shovel, probe, Avalanche Level 2 skills, and enough kick-turn technique to handle 35-degree slopes under load.

The honest grade
This is avalanche terrain. The approach slope above the Kjoselva has sections in the 30 to 35 degree range with open aspect. The upper southwest flank of Store Kjostind touches 40 degrees in places. In a Norwegian Level 3 forecast (Considerable) this route is often closed by local guides. Level 2 (Moderate) is the working condition.
In summer, the route becomes a DNT Blue to Red scramble without the ski descent. The same approach slope is scree and grass, and the southwest flank becomes a short rock scramble. Most Lyngen visitors do this route in ski-touring season. The summer version is a shoulder-season consolation, not the reason to come.
The route (ski touring)
Trailhead. Park at the ski-touring lot at Lyngseidet, signed for Goalsevárri. 20 to 30 cars, free. In high season (March and April) arrive before 08:30.
Lower approach. Skin up through open birch forest along the Kjoselva for 200 metres of gain. The trail widens above the trees. 45 to 60 minutes.
Middle approach. Open slope climbing in switchbacks toward the Goalsevárri ridge. Aspect begins to matter here. South-facing in the morning, the snow will be firm. Later in the day it softens. 60 to 90 minutes.
Summit push. From the Goalsevárri sub-summit, a short ridge leads to the Store Kjostind southwest flank. This is the steeper section. 40 minutes to the summit ski-off point.
Descent. The southwest flank gives 400 to 500 metres of open-slope skiing in good conditions. Return to the approach line for the lower descent. 30 to 45 minutes to the car in good snow.
The turn-back rule
- Varsom Level 3 or higher. The approach slope and southwest flank are both in avalanche terrain. Level 3 means rethink the objective.
- Wind loading above 1,000 metres. Fresh snow on top of a wind slab changes the southwest flank rapidly. If the ridge is visibly drifting, turn back.
- Whiteout on the Goalsevárri sub-summit. The terrain ahead has a convex roll that is a committing feature in poor visibility. Wait it out or reverse.
- Soft corn above 1,000 metres before 10:00. If the overnight refreeze did not happen, the whole aspect is in reactive condition. Descend before the sun does more work.
Gear for this route
- Transceiver, shovel, probe. Not optional. Check transceivers at the trailhead.
- Ski-touring skis, skins, ski crampons. The crampons come out on the southwest flank in firm conditions.
- Helmet. Worn from the summit ridge onward.
- Avalanche airbag if you own one. Lyngen is the place it earns its weight.
- Wind shell, insulation layer, spare gloves, goggles. Arctic March can be −15°C with wind.
- Map of the Lyngen Alps (Turkart Lyngshalvøya, 1:50,000). Printed. In a ski-jacket pocket.
Fjellvettreglene on this route
Four rules of the Norwegian Mountain Code apply directly:
- Rule 2: Adapt the trip to ability and conditions. The Lyngen ski objectives assume Avalanche Level 2 skills as baseline, not as ambition.
- Rule 3: Pay attention to weather and avalanche forecasts. varsom.no publishes the regional forecast each morning. Read it.
- Rule 4: Be equipped to help yourself and others. Transceiver, shovel, probe. Companion rescue drill before the season opens.
- Rule 8: Turn back in time. Lyngen has fatal accidents almost every season. Most were on routes that locals would have skipped on that day's forecast.

Who should ski this
- Ski tourers with Avalanche Level 2 and transceiver practice. This is the right first Lyngen objective.
- Clients of a certified guide. Magic Mountain Lodge, Lyngen Lodge, and international operators run Goalsevárri as a day-one objective.
- Returning visitors in a benign forecast. If you have done this once guided, a Level 1 or 2 day with a partner is a reasonable self-led objective.
Who should skip this
- First-time ski tourers. Lyngen is not where you learn. Take a course in Hemsedal or the Alps first.
- Solo skiers. The approach and descent are avalanche terrain. Not a solo route.
- Any Level 3 or 4 forecast day. Wait for the next weather window. There will be one.
