The towns, villages and fjords that anchor a trip here. Each opens its own guide.

Tromsø

Tromsø sits at 69°N with 75,000 residents, a university, a brewery, the Arctic Cathedral, and 69 days of polar night. It is the primary basecamp for Northern Lights chase tours, whale watching departures, and the gateway to Kvaløya and Senja. The Midnight Sun Marathon runs mid-June. The city has more pubs per capita than any Norwegian city outside Bergen.

  • Population: 75,000, largest city above the Arctic Circle
  • Aurora season: September–March, inside the auroral oval

Alta

Alta sits at the head of Altafjorden in Finnmark. The Northern Lights Observatory opened here in 1899, the first in the world. The Alta Canyon is Northern Europe’s largest, 400 meters deep. The town is a basecamp for dog sledding, Sami experiences, and ice hotel stays. The midnight sun lasts from May 16 to July 26.

  • Northern Lights Observatory, operational since 1899
  • Alta Canyon: 400m deep, 13 km long

North Cape

North Cape (Nordkapp) stands at 71°08’N on the island of Magerøya, the symbolic northernmost point of Europe. The 307-meter cliff drops straight into the Barents Sea. In summer, the midnight sun hangs above the horizon from May 13 to July 29. In winter, the polar night and aurora make the drive worth the ice. The E69 from Honningsvåg is 34 km of exposed Arctic road.

  • 71°08’N, symbolic northern tip of Europe
  • Midnight sun: May 13 – July 29

Vesterålen & Senja

Vesterålen is Lofoten’s quieter northern neighbour, five islands with sperm whale safaris, sea eagle colonies, and 80,000 puffin pairs on Bleiksøya. Andøya is the whale watching capital: sperm whales feed in the deep Bleik Canyon year-round. Senja, Norway’s second-largest island (1,586 km²), rises south of Vesterålen with jagged peaks, working fishing villages, and empty beaches. Segla (639m) is the signature peak. Mefjordvær and Husøy are fishing villages that have not been turned into tourist parks. The National Tourist Route runs the western coast.

  • Andøya whale safaris, sperm whales year-round
  • Bleiksøya puffin colony: 80,000+ nesting pairs

Sápmi

Sápmi, the Sami homeland, stretches across the Finnmark interior and into Troms. Karasjok holds the Sami Parliament (Sametinget) and De Samiske Samlinger museum. Kautokeino is the centre of Sami reindeer herding culture, with 100,000 reindeer on the surrounding vidda and the Kautokeino Easter Festival drawing thousands each spring. Tana is the heartland of the salmon-fishing Sámi along the Tana River. Manndalen in Troms keeps the coastal Sami craft tradition alive. All cultural experiences are Sami-owned and Sami-operated.

Lyngen

The Lyngen Alps rise 1,800 meters directly from the fjord, the most alpine landscape in Northern Norway. Lyngen is the premier ski touring destination in the Arctic: January to May, backcountry skiers descend from summit to sea level in a single run. In summer, the peaks draw hikers and climbers. The Skibotn aurora observatory sits at the fjord’s head, one of Northern Norway’s best dark-sky sites.
